It&#8217;s the software that drives the\u00a0<a class=\"urlextern\" title=\"http:\/\/wikipedia.com\" href=\"http:\/\/wikipedia.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wikipedia<\/a>\u00a0website. Setting up a MediaWiki install on your own domain can be done by following these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">To get started you&#8217;ll need to login to your control panel (<a class=\"urlextern\" title=\"https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/dashboard\" href=\"https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/dashboard\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/dashboard<\/a>) using your Skidmore username\u00a0and password.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sign-in.001.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-271\" src=\"http:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sign-in.001-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"sign in.001\" width=\"648\" height=\"365\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">Once logged in you&#8217;ll be at the homepage of your control panel. Navigate the\u00a0<strong>Web Applications<\/strong>\u00a0section of the cPanel and click\u00a0<strong>View More<\/strong>\u00a0for the\u00a0<strong>Featured Applications<\/strong>. To begin the install, click\u00a0<strong>install this application\u00a0<\/strong>in the upper-righthand corner.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/media-wiki-install.001-e1460751225534.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-383\" src=\"http:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/media-wiki-install.001-e1460751225534-1024x507.jpeg\" alt=\"media wiki install.001\" width=\"648\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">On the next page the installer will ask for some information about this install. The first thing you&#8217;ll want to do is decide where to install it. If you&#8217;re wanting to install MediaWiki on your main (the root) domain, you can leave the directory area empty. If you created a subdomain, you can select it from the dropdown menu. You also have the option of installing MediaWiki in a subfolder by typing in the folder name in the\u00a0<strong>Directory<\/strong>\u00a0field. In this instance, we have opted to install it in a subdomain called mediawiki.createoutestdomain.com. While we recommend you keep this option, it is possible to only do minor updates, or turn them off completely. The installer will also create a database for you automatically, but if you&#8217;ve already created one for this website you can choose\u00a0<strong>Let me manage the database settings<\/strong>\u00a0and enter the details.)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">Finally, you&#8217;ll need to create an initial username and password for the WordPress install. When it is complete you will see a link to your new MediaWiki site as well as a link to the back end administrative section for your MediaWiki site.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mediacenter\" src=\"https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/support\/_media\/applications\/my_wiki_links.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">6. Congratulations, you have now completed the installation of MediaWiki! You can now start to create collaborative documents on your own domain.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mediacenter\" src=\"https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/support\/_media\/applications\/my_mediawiki.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h1 id=\"managing-permissions\" class=\"sectionedit2\">Managing Permissions<\/h1>\n<div class=\"level1\">\n<p>The default Mediawiki installed has been customized to make it a bit harder for spammers to overwhelm wikis with illegitimate content and comments. This is done by modifying the\u00a0<strong>LocalSettings.php<\/strong>\u00a0file (a file that is included in every install in which it is possible to provide configurations details).<\/p>\n<p>By default, Mediawiki allows anonymous users to create pages and edit pages in the wiki. The modifications change this in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">Anonymous users cannot edit existing pages<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">Anonymous users cannot create pages<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">Registered users must click the confirmation link in the registration email in order to edit or create pages<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This approach should drastically reduce unsolicited content and comments on Mediawiki installations. One further step that administrator might take is to turn registration off after a predetermined amount of time. Users must create accounts by this date; after that, the settings are changed so that registrations are no longer open.<\/p>\n<p>To add this setting, you must edit\u00a0<strong>LocalSettings.php<\/strong>\u00a0in your Mediawiki install:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">Login to cPanel and browse to your\u00a0<a class=\"urlextern\" title=\"https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/support\/cpanel\/accessing-your-files-through-the-file-manager\" href=\"http:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/#accessing-your-files-through-the-file-manager\" rel=\"nofollow\">File Manager<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">In the File Manager, browser to the folder within public<em>html that contains your Mediawiki install. If you installed the wiki at the root of your domain, you won&#8217;t need to go any further than public<\/em>html. If you installed the wiki in a subdomain or subdirectory, you&#8217;ll need to find the directory that is associated with that space.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">Locate\u00a0<strong>LocalSettings.php<\/strong>\u00a0and click the\u00a0<strong>Edit<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Code Editor<\/strong>\u00a0icon at the top of the File Manager.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">Browse to the bottom of the document, and locate the custom settings that were added during the Mediawiki install and the line \u201c$wgGroupPermissions[&#8216;*&#8217;][&#8216;createaccount&#8217;] = false;\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-210\" src=\"http:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/11953831465_8e29aea940_z.jpg\" alt=\"11953831465_8e29aea940_z\" width=\"640\" height=\"226\" \/><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h1>Using MediaWiki<\/h1>\n<p>You can learn how to use this application at the\u00a0official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediawiki.org\/wiki\/Help:Contents\" target=\"_blank\">MediaWiki Help Pages<\/a>.
