Scalar<\/a> is a free, open source authoring and publishing platform that\u2019s designed to make it easy for authors to write long-form, born-digital scholarship online. Scalar enables users to assemble media from multiple sources and juxtapose them with their own writing in a variety of ways, with minimal technical expertise required.\u00a0More fundamentally, Scalar is a semantic web authoring tool that brings a considered balance between standardization and structural flexibility to all kinds of material.<\/p>\n

Scalar also features a built-in open API<\/a> that allows you blend\u00a0your Scalar content with other data sources, build your own visualizations, or create completely new interfaces for your materials. 1.\u00a0To get started you\u2019ll need to log in to your control panel (https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/dashboard<\/a>) using your Skidmore username\u00a0and password.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Once logged in you\u2019ll be at the homepage of your control panel. Navigate to the\u00a0Installatron <\/strong>by looking\u00a0under the \u2018Software\u2019 section or typing \u201cInstallatron\u201d into the search bar at the upper right corner of the page.<\/p>\n

3. Click on the Applications Browser<\/strong> tab (the one with the star). Then select Scalar\u00a0<\/strong>under the \u2018Apps for Content Management’\u00a0section.<\/p>\n

4. This page gives you more information about the Scalar software. To begin the install, click \u2018install this application\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0in the upper right-hand corner.<\/p>\n

5. On the next page the installer will ask for some information about this install. The first thing you\u2019ll want to do is decide where to install it. If you\u2019re wanting to install Scalar\u00a0on your main domain, you can leave the directory area empty. If you created a subdomain, you can select it from the dropdown menu. You also have the option of installing Scalar\u00a0in a subfolder by typing in the folder name in the\u00a0Directory\u00a0<\/strong>field. 6. By default the installer will automatically backup your website and update it anytime a new version comes out. While we recommend you keep this option, it is possible to only do minor updates, or turn them off completely. The installer will also create a database for you automatically, but if you\u2019ve already created one for this website you can choose\u00a0Let me manage the database settings<\/strong>\u00a0and enter the details. Click\u00a0Install<\/strong>\u00a0to continue. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

7. The installer will take just a few moments to install Scalar\u00a0and a progress bar will keep you updated. When it is complete you will see links to your new Scalar\u00a0site.<\/p>\n
