There are a number of scenarios when this might be necessary:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">You&#8217;re working with an application that allows you to install plugins\/extensions, but the files need to be manually moved to the server in order to add them. (Note: This is NOT required with WordPress which allows you to install plugins through the backend in your browser.)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">You&#8217;ve developed a custom site\/pages using a Web design program, and you need to upload the files you created to the server<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">You&#8217;re installing an application that isn&#8217;t part of\u00a0<a class=\"wikilink1\" title=\"cpanel:applications-available-in-installatron\" href=\"http:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/#applications-available-in-installatron\">the applications in Installatron<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One way to upload files is by using\u00a0<a class=\"wikilink1\" title=\"cpanel:accessing-your-files-through-the-file-manager\" href=\"http:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/accessing-your-files-through-the-file-manager\/\">the File Manager<\/a>\u00a0that is part of\u00a0<a class=\"wikilink1\" title=\"cpanel:introduction-to-cpanel\" href=\"https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/support\/cpanel\/introduction-to-cpanel\">cPanel<\/a>. However, sometimes you&#8217;ll find it easier\/necessary to use\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>, or File Transfer Protocol, to move files to the server. This can be particularly useful if you&#8217;re working with a Web space where you&#8217;re not the owner (so you don&#8217;t have access to the File Manager in cPanel) or if you need to provide file access to someone else to your space on the Web server.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"what-exactly-is-ftp\" class=\"sectionedit2\">What exactly is FTP?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"level2\">\n<p>File Transfer Protocol is a method that allows you to remotely move files to a Web server from another location \u2013 usually your local\/personal computer. Using a pre-defined\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0account (with a username and password), you can configure an\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0client (a program you run on your computer that allows you to transfer files via\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>There are lots of\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0clients that you can use; some are free and some are not. A few free ones you might consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\"><a class=\"urlextern\" title=\"https:\/\/filezilla-project.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/filezilla-project.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">FileZilla (Mac &amp; PC)<\/a><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\"><a class=\"urlextern\" title=\"http:\/\/cyberduck.io\/\" href=\"http:\/\/cyberduck.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">CyberDuck (Mac &amp; PC)<\/a><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the purpose of this tutorial, we&#8217;ll show you how to set up\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0in FileZilla, but you should be able to generalize these instructions to use in any\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0client.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"get-information-about-your-ftp-account\" class=\"sectionedit3\">Get Information about Your FTP Account<\/h2>\n<div class=\"level2\">\n<p>If you&#8217;re FTPing to your own space on the Web server, or if you&#8217;re setting up an\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0account for someone else to use to\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0to your space, you&#8217;ll need to start by getting information about the\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0credentials from cPanel:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">Login to domains.skidmore.edu.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">In the\u00a0<strong>Search Box<\/strong>\u00a0at the top of the page, search for \u201c<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u201d, and click the\u00a0<strong><abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0Accounts<\/strong>\u00a0icon that appears.<a href=\"https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/ftpaccount-app.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-221\" src=\"https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/ftpaccount-app.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1429\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/ftpaccount-app.png 1429w, https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/ftpaccount-app-300x147.png 300w, https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/ftpaccount-app-768x376.png 768w, https:\/\/domains.skidmore.edu\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/ftpaccount-app-1024x502.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1429px) 100vw, 1429px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">You&#8217;ll have the option to create a new\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0account, or you can scroll down the page to find the credentials for the default\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0account. If you want to create an account, fill out the\u00a0<strong>Add\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0Account\u00a0<\/strong>form with a username and password. By default, the new\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0account will be limited to a directory with the same name as the account you&#8217;re creating. In addition to any accounts you&#8217;ve created, in the Special\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0Accounts section, you&#8217;ll see the default\u00a0<abbr title=\"File Transfer Protocol\">FTP<\/abbr>\u00a0Account. You&#8217;ll know this account because the username corresponds to your cPanel username.
